Multiverse of Madness opens on Defender Strange, a multiversal variant of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). Hailing from Earth-TRN953 (designated by Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi as Earth-617), Defender Strange is killed early in the film, at which point the MCU’s main Doctor Strange buries him beneath an assortment of bricks on a New York City rooftop.

Night of the Living Sorcerer

Later in the film, Strange finds himself stranded in a devastated alternate reality, with no way of physically returning to the MCU (which is referred to as Earth-616 in the film, though is officially designated as Earth-199999 in the Marvel multiverse) . In turn, he resorts to dreamwalking, a spell that allows the caster to inhabit the body of another version of themselves in a different universe. Strange possesses the decaying corpse of Defender Strange, thus turning him into a zombie-like creature officially referred to as Dead Strange.
